pavilions of encounter
In what ways can architecture become a tool for emotional growth and shared learning? The design of the Pavilions of Encounter emerged from a collaborative process between architects, teachers, and students. What began as a conceptual design evolved into pedagogically attuned retreat spaces for the Timeout School. The project grew out of a collective reflection after a fire in the school building — exploring retreat not merely as protection, but as a process of transformation: from withdrawal to awareness, and ultimately to self-expression. The architecture translates this inner journey into space, offering a physical framework for resilience and connection.

How can spatial sequence and atmosphere mirror the emotional movement from introspection to encounter? The two pavilions and an adjoining stage embody this evolving process. The first pavilion is vertical and enclosed, six metres high and lit from above, focusing attention on the centre — a place for quiet conversation and calm. The second pavilion gradually opens toward its surroundings, offering a more extroverted atmosphere where exchange becomes natural. Seating side by side, students sense both protection and openness. A large, flexible weather screen of outdoor fabric ensures lightness and comfort, while the adjacent stage extends the experience — a space to step forward, to speak, and to share what has been learned.

What can be achieved when educational ambition meets constructive simplicity? What can be achieved when educational ambition meets constructive simplicity? With limited means, the project creates architecture that is both thoughtful and approachable. The revised design focuses on two generous, light-filled pavilions and a simple stage, staying within the available budget while adding valuable spaces for learning and reflection. The stage also serves as a practical workshop piece — a first opportunity for students to build something themselves, strengthening their connection to the place and to the act of making.
